This week marks the start of a seminar series organised by Professors Athena Tsingarida (CreA-Patrimoine, ULB) and Irene Lemos (Faculty of Classics, University of Oxford), in the framework of their collaborative research project “Crete and Euboea in an interconnecting world (from the 12th to 6th century BC): The role of coastal settlements in short and long-distance networks of exchange”.
This is one of the nine collaborative research projects supported by the Wiener-Anspach Foundation for 2022-2024. It is also the second collaboration between the teams of Professors Tsingarida and Lemos supported by the Foundation (more information on the first project, “Beyond the polis. Ritual practices and the construction of social identity in Early Greece”, supported from 2012 to 2015, is available on our website).
In December 2022, the FNRS additionally granted its support to the current collaboration – specifically the part of the project concerning Crete – through its PDR instrument.
The seminars will take place online, every Monday at 5pm until the beginning of March. Speakers include Wiener-Anspach Alumna Tzveta Manolova, who will give a presentation on “The invention of the oared galley and its early evolution: origin, implications, and key tipping points” on Monday 6 February. Tzveta Manolova was a Wiener-Anspach Postdoctoral Fellow at ULB from 2020 to 2022, working under the supervision of Athena Tsingarida, herself a former Wiener-Anspach fellow.
