Among the research projects supported by the Foundation for the 2018-2020 period, “Cat19 – Panorama of the French novel, 1801-1830” seeked to build up a full picture of all aspects of the French-language novel in the early 19th century. Led by Professors Valérie André at the Université libre de Bruxelles and Catriona Seth at the University of Oxford, this work has resulted in the creation of a bilingual (French-English) database listing over 5,500 works and 2,000 authors.

Intended to be a continuation of the Bibliographie du genre romanesque 1751-1800 (1977), by Angus Martin, Vivienne G. Mylne and Richard Frautschi, this database fills a major gap as “the production of novels in the first decades of the 19th century had until recently been marked by the absence of such an exhaustive catalogue”.

The Wiener-Anspach Foundation is delighted to have supported this project.
